Case Study: United Nations Development Programme achieves safer, more efficient, and sustainable fleet management with Microsoft Power BI

UNDP drives innovation in fleet management through IoT

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) needed to modernize management of roughly 3,000 vehicles after relying largely on paper-based tracking that hampered safety, security, efficiency, and carpooling. Working with Microsoft Power BI (and broader Microsoft Azure and IoT platforms) and partner QuEST Global, UNDP sought real‑time visibility into vehicle location, driver behavior, speed, and vehicle health to protect staff, reduce costs, and lower emissions.

Microsoft Power BI helped deliver an IoT fleet solution—using OBD2 dongles, QuEST Global’s fleet software, and Azure IoT Central—with dashboards and trip analysis in Power BI for safety scores and operational reports. Pilots in Georgia, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, and Cambodia produced immediate safety benefits (real‑time alerts and improved driver behavior), enabled carpooling and route consolidation, and saved the Georgia office thousands of dollars in operating costs while reducing fuel use and emissions; the solution also strengthened donor confidence and is scaling to include hybrid/EVs and satellite connectivity.
