TriCore Reference Laboratories, a large clinical lab headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico, sought to turn routine lab data into timely, actionable insights to improve prenatal care and demonstrate the value of laboratory services amid Medicare reimbursement cuts. Facing high rates of inadequate prenatal care in the state and financial pressures, TriCore partnered around Microsoft technologies—using SQL Server and Microsoft Power BI—to better identify and communicate risks to expectant mothers and care providers.

TriCore implemented a Population Health Intervention algorithm built on Microsoft SQL Server with Microsoft Power BI as the presentation layer, enabling real‑time and longitudinal risk stratification for prenatal patients. The Microsoft Power BI–enabled solution produced measurable results in a pilot: a 40% reduction in preterm delivery and more than a 50% reduction in NICU occupancy, and TriCore is now expanding the approach to other conditions and sharing the model with other labs.
