Preview of the Sandvik Coromant Case Study

Swedish tooling solutions company upgrades decade-old architecture to Azure, analyzes data with Power BI

Sandvik Coromant, a Swedish tooling solutions company, faced a decade-old on‑prem sales data warehouse built on SQL Server and SSAS that relied heavily on Excel and SSRS. With growing data volumes and nearly 3,000 daily users, the 10+ bare‑metal server environment became costly, slow, and hard to maintain; the company needed a scalable, consolidated platform to reduce total cost of ownership and speed time‑to‑market. They chose Microsoft Power BI and Azure technologies to modernize their analytics stack.

Using Microsoft Power BI together with Azure services (including Azure Virtual Machines, Data Factory, Cosmos DB, Data Lake Storage Gen2, Synapse, Databricks, Functions, Service Bus and more), Sandvik Coromant built a cloud Business Data Platform that harmonizes, processes, and serves data for self‑service analytics. The solution replaced QlikView, Excel and about 300 SSRS reports, produced the “Big Sales” report (180,000 views every 90 days by ~1,600 users), scaled to over 11,000 reports managed by a 12‑person Power BI CoE, and cut hardware maintenance while improving data freshness and decision speed.
