South African nonprofit tackles barriers to youth employment with mobile teams

Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator is a South African nonprofit that matches young people with jobs to tackle a youth unemployment rate exceeding 50 percent. Facing slow, costly IT and the need to mobilize more than 500 staff quickly across regions, Harambee accepted Microsoft technology grants — including Office 365, SharePoint, and Microsoft Power BI — to improve collaboration, agility, and scalability.

Using Microsoft Power BI alongside Microsoft’s cloud services, Harambee deployed over 750 licenses to enable mobile teams and faster onboarding (mobilization moved from weeks to minutes), eliminate a prior 10-day IT turnaround for simple changes, and expand instantly into new countries like Rwanda. The Microsoft Power BI–enabled solution helped cut licensing costs by about 35% and empowered 500+ staff to scale job-matching operations and reach more youth nationwide.
