Case Study: Nedbank achieves increased agility and lower TCO to drive a data-driven culture with Microsoft Power BI

A Microsoft Power BI Case Study

Preview of the Nedbank Case Study

South African bank, Nedbank, standardizes on Power BI for increased agility, low TCO to drive data-driven culture

Nedbank, a leading South African bank, needed to scale analytics across the organization to embed a data-driven culture, reduce dependence on a few developers, and lower total cost of ownership while increasing agility. To meet those goals the bank selected Microsoft Power BI (alongside Azure and Azure Analysis Services) as its enterprise BI standard and began a program to enable self-service analytics and cloud migration.

Nedbank standardized on Microsoft Power BI, rolling out pilots in 2017 and expanding licenses and cloud workloads to enable citizen developers, integrate SSAS Tabular and many data sources, and migrate datasets to Azure. The move delivered measurable impact: a 60% reduction in licensing costs (with a further 20% projected), more than 8,000 Power BI reports versus ~300 on other tools, year‑over‑year usage more than doubling, and much faster delivery (a loyalty report built in 3 months vs 12, and a COVID‑19 card‑spend dashboard shipped in under two weeks), improving agility, governance, and decision-making.
