Case Study: Sentara Healthcare achieves a single source of truth for patient data with Microsoft Power BI

A Microsoft Power BI Case Study

Preview of the Sentara Healthcare Case Study

Sentara healthcare creates enterprise data platform on Microsoft Azure for single source of truth in patient data management with the help of CitiusTech

Sentara Healthcare, a not-for-profit health system serving more than two million residents across 300+ sites, faced challenges in big data integration, standardization, and privacy that prevented a unified, 360-degree view of patients. Working with partner CitiusTech, Sentara built an enterprise data platform on Microsoft Azure and used Microsoft Power BI for analytics and visualization to create a single source of truth across disparate source systems.

CitiusTech’s Azure-based solution centralized data in Azure Data Lake Storage, used Azure Data Factory for scalable ingestion, and applied H-Scale and other processing to standardize and secure the data. The platform ingested health records for more than 450,000 patients, consolidated 400+ database tables/entities, and enforced 500+ data quality and standardization rules, enabling faster, use-case-driven insights (for sepsis, VTE, etc.) while meeting HIPAA requirements. Microsoft Power BI provided the analytics layer so teams could visualize and act on the standardized data, delivering a unified, secure, and measurable improvement in data access and clinical analytics.
