Preview of the Tucson Unified School District Case Study

School district moves forward on a trajectory for better learning outcomes with affordable devices and cloud environment

Tucson Unified School District, Arizona’s second-largest district serving more than 45,000 students across 89 schools, faced the challenge of modernizing a sprawling, diverse fleet of roughly 50,000 devices and closing a technology gap after years on Windows 7. To build a secure, cloud-first environment for learning and administration the district deployed Microsoft Education solutions—including Windows 10, Office 365 ProPlus, Azure Active Directory P2, Intune, System Center Configuration Manager, Minecraft: Education Edition, and Microsoft Power BI—to deliver modern devices, cloud productivity, and centralized management.

With Microsoft support and partners, Tucson Unified used a mix of in-place upgrades, hardware refreshes, and co-management (SCCM plus Intune) to move nearly all devices to Windows 10, cut imaging and update time, reduce external contractor costs, and enable remote, district-wide management (Intune slated to reach every school by end of 2019). Microsoft Power BI now visualizes and publishes student achievement and operational data for staff, families, and the public, while Office 365 and Minecraft: Education Edition deliver classroom outcomes—teaching coding, collaboration, and workforce-ready skills—backed by stronger, scalable security.
