Pushing the boundaries of renewable energy production efficiency with Azure Digital Twins

Doosan, a leading South Korean heavy industries and construction company, faced the challenge of consolidating hundreds of IoT and weather data streams to improve wind-turbine performance, predict power output, and reduce maintenance costs as it scales its renewable portfolio. To meet this need it partnered with Microsoft Power BI (alongside Azure Digital Twins, Azure IoT Hub and Bentley iTwin) to build a digital twin and data-visualization strategy for its wind farms.

Using Azure Digital Twins and IoT Hub with Bentley’s iTwin for 3D models and Microsoft Power BI dashboards in Teams, Doosan deployed Performance Watchdog and Power Prediction to compare real-time output with physics-based and ML models and to forecast generation. The solution delivered clearer operational visibility, more accurate power commitments (reducing penalty risk), and the potential to cut operations and maintenance costs—benchmarks from similar digital-twin projects indicate around a 15% O&M reduction—while unlocking new R&D and revenue opportunities.
