Case Study: Powel achieves smart leak detection and reduced water loss with Microsoft Power BI

A Microsoft Power BI Case Study

Preview of the Powel Case Study

Powel - Customer Case Study

Powel, a Norwegian software company serving the power and utilities sector, faced municipalities losing more than 30% of water from aging distribution networks and needed a way to detect leaks and monitor flow in real time. To digitize water and turn flow into actionable data, Powel used Microsoft Power BI alongside Azure IoT Hub and Azure Machine Learning to collect, visualize and analyze sensor and historical SCADA data.

Powel built a pipeline that ingested live sensor data with Azure IoT Hub, trained predictive models in Azure Machine Learning Studio on Trondheim SCADA data (2013–2015), and used Microsoft Power BI Desktop to explore and clean the data prior to modeling. The combined solution—leveraging Microsoft Power BI for analysis—enables near real‑time detection and alerts for abnormal flow, helping utilities identify leaks sooner, save money and conserve water, and is being integrated into Powel’s main product line for broader rollout.
