PKP Energetyka - Customer Case Study

PKP Energetyka, the Polish railway energy supplier, is working to make the rail sector climate-neutral under its Green Railway program but struggled to manage highly variable renewable generation (sun and wind) across its distribution network. To gain forecasting and operational visibility it adopted Microsoft Power BI together with Microsoft Azure services (including Azure Machine Learning), implemented with support from Microsoft partner Elitmind.

Elitmind built a solution on Microsoft Azure that uses Azure Machine Learning predictive models and Microsoft Power BI dashboards to collect, process, and visualize real‑time data from distributed renewables, enabling proactive balancing of supply and demand and mobile access for operators. The system has helped stabilize the grid, supported the launch of Europe’s largest traction energy storage (supplying ~1,500 train journeys monthly), contributed to a 2022 reduction of about 800,000 tons of CO2, and keeps PKP Energetyka on track to hit its 85% renewables target by 2030.
