Northwell Health shortens hospital stays with better care team coordination thanks to Microsoft Teams

Northwell Health, a 23‑hospital integrated delivery network with 72,000 employees, struggled with fragmented, paper‑based workflows, delayed lab-result awareness, and HIPAA‑safe clinician communication at the bedside. To address these challenges the organization’s Innovation Center built NORA, a Microsoft Teams chatbot, and a Rounding App using Microsoft cloud and Power Platform technologies—Azure, Azure DevOps, Microsoft Teams, Power Apps, Power Automate—and analytics with Microsoft Power BI.

Using Microsoft Power BI alongside Teams and the Power Platform, Northwell pushed real‑time lab alerts and natural‑language patient queries via NORA and centralized rounding tasks into the Rounding App with a Power BI dashboard for oversight. Clinicians report saving 30–45 minutes per day with NORA and nurses about 90 minutes per day with the Rounding App; stays are shortened by hours, on‑time discharge and patient‑quality metrics improved, excess patient days were reduced, and staffing decisions are now driven by measurable Power BI insights.
