A Microsoft Power BI Case Study
Munich Re, a global reinsurance firm based in Munich, faced frustrated employees and wasted space across a district of buildings where meeting rooms were often reserved but left unused or blocked by recurring bookings. To address this, Munich Re teamed with Microsoft and partner Campana & Schott, deploying sensors and cloud technologies (Azure, Azure IoT Hub, Exchange Online) and analytics through Microsoft Power BI to gain real-time visibility into room occupancy.
The implemented solution sends sensor data via Azure IoT Hub into Azure, where it’s processed and presented in interactive Microsoft Power BI reports for Facility Management; LEDs on room doors and Outlook/Graph integration (with an Outlook chatbot) show availability and prompt organizers if no one arrives within ten minutes. As a result, Munich Re has increased transparency and room utilization, improved employee satisfaction, and begun rolling the sensor-and-LED system out to many of its roughly 100 meeting rooms, with measurable controls and real-time metrics provided by Microsoft Power BI.
