MCS improves business-critical applications for faster patient care with replication and reporting in Azure

MCS, a large Puerto Rico health provider serving about 386,000 customers through 11 service centers, faced scaling and timeliness challenges with its legacy AS/400 core system—needing to replicate 130+ tables hourly so patients and providers could get fast coverage and clinical decisions. To modernize reporting and analytics, MCS adopted Microsoft Power BI alongside Microsoft Azure services (Azure Data Factory and Azure SQL Database Managed Instance) to address replication, reporting, and local expertise gaps.

Working with Microsoft, MCS implemented Azure Data Factory to replicate AS/400 data in near real time into Azure SQL Managed Instance and used Microsoft Power BI for dashboards and business intelligence; a two‑month proof of concept moved to full production in three months. The Microsoft Power BI–enabled solution reduced backend maintenance by leveraging PaaS, sped up reporting and operational workflows, improved analytics for faster patient care, and positioned MCS to serve more customers concurrently while simplifying future scaling.
