Leading health provider revolutionizes mammography, reduces errors with custom computer vision models

Volpara Solutions, a New Zealand–based mammography analytics provider, faced the challenge that 1–2% of screening images are rejected for poor quality—leading to hundreds of thousands of recalls and delays—while image metadata was often unreliable for identifying implants and quality‑control phantoms. Working with Microsoft Power BI and Azure services, Volpara used the Microsoft Custom Vision service as part of its Volpara Enterprise Analytics to address image‑classification gaps without relying on metadata.

By training Custom Vision models on pixel data and integrating them into analytics and Microsoft Power BI dashboards, Volpara enabled clinical staff to reclassify images and retrain models through an easy UI. The Microsoft Power BI–backed solution improved the accuracy of statistics (compression, dose, breast volumes), reduced unnecessary recalls and mammography errors, and sped up workflows for clinicians and patients.
