LA Unified rallies partners to build COVID-19 tracking app and accelerate getting kids back to school

Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), one of the largest K-12 systems in the United States, faced the challenge of safely reopening schools during COVID-19 while protecting 650,000 students, 75,000 employees, and their families. Working with Microsoft and other partners, LAUSD needed a low-code, data-driven way to manage testing, symptom screening, and school entry at massive scale.

Microsoft helped LAUSD build the Daily Pass app using Power Apps and Power BI to coordinate testing, support symptom checks, generate QR codes for school access, and provide dashboards for contact tracing and situation monitoring. The solution enabled real-time decision-making, helped keep potentially infected individuals out of school, and created a scalable model LAUSD believes can support thousands to millions of users and serve as a blueprint for other districts.
