LA County Public Defender uses Microsoft solutions to keep serving more than 100,000 clients per year, even in a pandemic

LA County Public Defender, the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office, works to provide legal defense to more than 100,000 clients each year. When the Covid-19 pandemic forced offices to close in March 2020, the organization needed a way to keep 1,200 employees working securely from home while still supporting court appearances and client services. Using Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams, along with existing Azure infrastructure, the office quickly shifted from paper-based, in-person work to a remote, digitally connected environment.

Microsoft helped LA County Public Defender deploy collaboration and case-support tools in a single weekend, including Teams, SharePoint, Power Apps, and Power BI dashboards. The result was that 83% of staff were fully online and operational by Monday, far above the local agency average of less than 30%, while a Power Apps-based Covid-19 screening process helped prevent dozens of potential exposures. Microsoft’s solution also improved productivity, strengthened IT trust across the office, and reduced the need for physical contact during court operations.
