IoT solution helps keep emergency vehicles rolling on New York City’s busy streets

Stealth Power, a small company that develops idle‑reduction systems, was tasked with helping the New York City Fire Department keep ambulances mission‑ready without long periods of engine idling. To meet FDNY’s requirement to power communications, medical equipment, HVAC and life‑support systems with the engine off, Stealth Power deployed embedded systems running Windows 10 IoT Core and connected them to the cloud using Microsoft Azure and visualization and reporting through Microsoft Power BI.

Stealth Power’s IoT-enabled smart mobile power solution (installed on more than 300 ambulances, with IoT connectivity initially on 60+ vehicles and more being rolled out) provides real‑time alerts and predictive analytics that reduce fuel use, emissions and maintenance downtime. By eliminating idling—for example, 10 hours saved per ambulance can prevent about 330 pounds of CO2 and save 15 gallons of fuel per day—FDNY can cut fuel consumption in top vehicles by up to 34%, potentially saving the city an estimated US$3 million and reducing over 20 million pounds of CO2 annually; dashboards in Microsoft Power BI give fleet managers the operational and ROI insights to track those gains.
