Case Study: INPEX Corporation achieves enhanced data analytics and operational efficiency with Microsoft Power BI

INPEX, one of Japan’s largest integrated energy developers, needed to modernize its AVEVA PI System after running it on on‑premise servers in Niigata—facing expiring hardware/OS maintenance, the operational risk of having to travel 300 km for serious incidents, and strict security/networking requirements. To enable better data visualization, collaboration and digital transformation, INPEX selected Microsoft Power BI alongside Microsoft Azure, Azure ExpressRoute, Microsoft 365 E5 and the Power Platform.

Working with Mitsui Knowledge Industry, Microsoft Power BI helped migrate the AVEVA PI System to Azure (completed Jan 8, 2022) using ExpressRoute for a closed network and tightened security. The move eliminated server maintenance, kept total costs roughly the same over five years while reducing maintenance and replacement man‑hours, and freed IT staff to spend significantly more time on advanced analysis—enabling expanded analytics and visualization (including machine‑learning anomaly detection and maintenance analytics) and accelerating INPEX’s DX efforts.
