Case Study: Humana achieves consolidation of 47 data sources and faster population-health insights with Microsoft Power BI

A Microsoft Power BI Case Study

Preview of the Humana Case Study

Humana consolidates 47 data sources and BI tools into a singular Power BI and Azure solution

Humana, a large U.S. health insurer, faced fragmented analytics across 47 disparate data sources and BI tools that made it slow and difficult to get cohesive insights. To standardize reporting and speed decision‑making, Humana adopted Microsoft Power BI as its primary BI tool and paired it with Azure services (Azure Data Lake Storage and Azure Active Directory) to consolidate data and access control.

Using Microsoft Power BI, Humana’s teams merged multiple vendor survey datasets into a single master table in Azure, optimized queries with Power Query, and built intuitive dashboards using features like Chiclet Slicers, bookmarks, and Shape Map tooltips. The Microsoft Power BI solution dramatically reduced visual load times, enabled rapid COVID‑19 reporting and iterative updates, and drove strong adoption—monthly active users rose 97% and new apps/reports increased 37%—showing measurable operational impact and broader use beyond crisis response.
