How Miami-Dade Water gets smarter with the Internet of Things

Miami Dade County Water and Sewer Department (WASD) manages water and sewer services for nearly three million residents but faced an aging, sprawling infrastructure and a deluge of SCADA data that spreadsheets and basic SQL tools couldn’t handle. Under pressure from the EPA to improve operations and reporting, WASD turned to Microsoft Power BI and Azure services (Azure SQL Data Warehouse, Azure IoT solution accelerators, Power BI) to visualize and analyze long‑running telemetry from pumps, pipes, and sensors.

Using a Microsoft Power BI–centered Azure solution, WASD ingested more than 15 billion rows of historical SCADA data and adds over 4 million rows daily into Azure SQL Data Warehouse, enabling analysis of 1,000+ pump stations and 22 years of data in seconds instead of days. The platform powers near‑real‑time dashboards and GIS visualizations for proactive maintenance, faster incident response, better budgeting, and scalable reuse across county agencies—delivering measurable speed, cost savings, and improved operational insight.
