Hôpital Montfort builds a case for better healthcare with Power BI

Hôpital Montfort, Ontario’s only French‑speaking academic hospital, needed to reduce unnecessary laboratory tests as part of the Choosing Wisely Canada initiative and to give physicians easy access to interactive performance data. Reporting from the Meditech system had been time‑consuming and noninteractive, so the hospital adopted Microsoft Power BI (integrated with Azure Active Directory) to make actionable, secure analytics available to clinicians with minimal IT support.

Using Microsoft Power BI, Montfort built dashboards fed by SSIS ETL and SQL Server tabular models, connected through an on‑premises data gateway and protected with row‑level security; a single developer assembled the solution in under two days. Physicians could drill into real‑time metrics, and within 30 days ordering patterns shifted (notably a move from blanket electrolyte order‑sets to targeted sodium/potassium tests); the Emergency Department reduced lab utilization by 30% with no adverse patient impact, and broader rollout was planned for department chiefs and all physicians.
