Case Study: Vapiano achieves faster insights and scalable global expansion with Microsoft Power BI

A Microsoft Power BI Case Study

Preview of the Vapiano Case Study

Global restaurant chain dishes on the benefits of cloud computing

Vapiano, a global fast‑casual restaurant chain, struggled with rising storage costs, limited IT staff, and unreliable VPN connections to Bonn-hosted servers as it expanded to 185 restaurants in 31 countries. To support new services—mobile apps, virtual smart‑card payments and online ordering—Vapiano partnered with Obungi and moved to Microsoft cloud technologies, explicitly including Microsoft Power BI as part of its business intelligence strategy to modernize and scale operations.

Obungi implemented a hybrid cloud environment on Microsoft Azure (using Azure Active Directory, Azure App Service, Azure SQL Database, BizTalk, Office 365 and a central data warehouse) and integrated reporting so managers and franchisees can access real‑time KPIs. The solution reduced storage costs, sped time‑to‑market for new revenue streams (online ordering), launched a CRM loyalty app and in‑store kiosks, delivered BI reports to ~200 employees, and paved the way to mobile analytics with Microsoft Power BI to drive better, faster decisions.
