Finning International Inc, the world’s largest Caterpillar equipment dealer, faced a collapsing mining market and needed to help customers boost yields and cut costs by turning massive, continuously streaming machine sensor data into actionable insight. To build a scalable IoT and BI capability, Finning partnered with Metric Arts and adopted Microsoft Power BI alongside Azure services to make terabytes of sensor data accessible and usable for predictive analytics.

Finning implemented an Azure-based pipeline (MongoDB, HDInsight, Azure SQL) with RStudio/Azure Machine Learning for models and Microsoft Power BI for interactive dashboards and reporting. The Microsoft Power BI-enabled solution let customers visualize and act on data in real time, producing strong results: an 80% drop in operator-caused machine events, a 10% reduction in unexpected stops, 103 more machine days that enabled transporting over 1 million additional tons in a year, and a 17% cut in idle running time.
