Ecolab, a global water, hygiene, and energy technology company, faced a major patient-safety challenge: low hand-hygiene compliance among healthcare workers that contributed to high rates of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). To support its Compliance Monitoring System and a digital transformation to the cloud, Ecolab adopted Microsoft Azure and analytics with Microsoft Power BI to collect and analyze large volumes of hygiene and usage data.

Ecolab’s solution pairs hardware (soap/sanitizer dispensers, bedside beacons, and staff badges) with cloud infrastructure and reporting through Microsoft Power BI to monitor and remind staff in real time. The system increased hand-hygiene compliance to about 90% (from roughly 40–50%), and four major infections dropped by 25% in the year after implementation; Ecolab now tracks roughly 500,000 data points daily, has deployments in 12 hospitals with trials in eight more, and uses Microsoft Power BI insights to scale and customize implementations.
