Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane set out to modernize how it monitors and oversees rail construction sites, tackling the challenge of making onsite and remote quality checks faster, safer and data-driven. To do this, the group’s subsidiaries Italferr and FSTechnology partnered with Microsoft technologies—including Microsoft Power BI, HoloLens, Azure Data Lake, Azure Synapse and Azure Cognitive Services—to integrate drone imagery, AI and augmented reality into construction oversight.

The vendor solution combined drone-collected data with cloud analytics and AI, delivering augmented-reality remote assist and interactive dashboards so engineers can run intelligence-led inspections both onsite and remotely. Microsoft Power BI provided the visual analytics layer while Azure services handled data ingestion and AI analysis, resulting in faster work completion, reduced costs and more efficient, optimized quality checks across rail projects.
