Colbún uses Power BI to automate its carbon footprint measurement

Colbún, a Chilean electric power generation company with 26 plants in Chile and Peru, faced the challenge of accurately measuring and managing its carbon footprint across diverse generation assets and Scope 3 sources. To automate and visualize emissions data so it could be analyzed and acted on company-wide, Colbún implemented Microsoft Power BI as part of its sustainability and reporting efforts.

Using Microsoft Power BI to aggregate SharePoint-collected data and automate calculations, Colbún reduced validation time from two months to two weeks and gained interactive trend and year-over-year analysis. The Power BI solution contributed to measurable environmental improvements: a 29% lower emissions factor than the National Grid System average in 2018, 7% lower greenhouse gas emissions in Chile versus 2017, a 4.1% reduction in Colbún’s Chile carbon footprint in 2018, and an 8.3% drop in Fenix/Perú emissions year-over-year; Colbún was also the first Chilean company awarded the Huella Chile maximum distinction.
