Code for South Florida “helps the helpers” by innovating for nonprofits and government

Code for South Florida, a Miami‑based nonprofit that builds civic technology for nonprofits and government, faced an urgent affordable‑housing challenge: a complex, one‑to‑three‑month application process that left many residents housing‑burdened and at risk. The organization leverages Microsoft tools—including Microsoft Power BI, Power Apps, and Microsoft 365—to prototype low‑code/no‑code solutions that public‑sector partners can adopt and maintain.

Using Microsoft Power BI together with Power Apps, Code for South Florida developed the GetHousing app to combine zoning data and predictive analytics, surface soon‑to‑be‑available units, and unify application forms to reduce wasted applications and streamline the housing process. The nonprofit applied the same Microsoft approach across other projects—condensing onboarding for a tax‑filing tool from a month to two weeks, training five organizations, and helping more than 550 people file for $1.1 million in tax refunds—demonstrating the tangible impact of Microsoft Power BI–based solutions.
