Coats, the world’s leading industrial thread manufacturer, faced rising labor and manufacturing costs plus environmental compliance pressures, and needed better visibility into machine performance—especially frequent thread breaks during cone winding—and environmental discharges. To accelerate its digital transformation, Coats adopted Microsoft Azure IoT technologies and built operator and executive dashboards with Microsoft Power BI to gather and act on high-frequency machine and environmental data.

Using Azure IoT Edge to process and compress data at the source, Azure Stream Analytics for continuous event processing, and dashboards created with Microsoft Power BI, Coats deployed solutions across its factories (including an environmental rollout to 12 sites) in just five months with a small team. The implementation delivered near-real-time operator alerts, hourly executive insights, early detection of high breakage in the winding process, and put Coats on track to meet an initial target of an 8% productivity increase while improving environmental monitoring.
