A Microsoft Power BI Case Study
Parkland County, AB, a Canadian municipality serving over 32,000 residents, faced fragmentation from more than 60 legacy systems, paper-based processes, and siloed departmental workflows that hindered efficiency and citizen self-service. To modernize and standardize operations, Parkland County, AB adopted Microsoft Power BI alongside Microsoft Dynamics 365 and the Microsoft Power Platform to move to the cloud, automate manual tasks, and improve resident engagement.
Using Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Service, Finance, and Human Resources together with Power Apps, Power Automate and Microsoft Power BI dashboards, the vendor delivered a unified, cloud-based platform that enabled a 3-1-1 single point of contact, mobile field CRM integrated with GIS, digitized employee and permit workflows, and real-time financial monitoring. The implementation allowed Parkland County, AB to retire multiple legacy systems, reduce costs by an estimated 10%, speed up approvals (including auto-approved permits), and boost transparency and citizen access through an online portal—benefits driven in part by Microsoft Power BI’s reporting and analytics.
