AI gives Ukrainian internet taxi start-up real competitive edge

Uklon, a Kyiv‑based internet taxi start‑up, was struggling against global and local rivals and an inefficient “bid‑up” fare process that forced customers to guess what to offer drivers. To turn data into a competitive advantage, Uklon worked with partner SMART Business and Microsoft Power BI, along with Azure Machine Learning and Microsoft AI solutions, to automate fare pricing and better tailor offers to riders.

SMART Business implemented a custom algorithm on Microsoft Azure using Microsoft Power BI analytics and AI to suggest optimal fares based on time of day, traffic, distance and past acceptances. The solution led to customers accepting suggested fares 75% of the time, an 18% increase in successful bookings at peak times, a rise in Uklon’s NPS to 30 (while a key competitor fell to 22), and positioned Uklon to expand into more Ukrainian cities.
