A Microsoft Power BI Case Study
Advocate Health Care, one of Illinois’s largest hospital systems with 37,000 associates and 400+ sites of care, faced the challenge of standardizing collaboration, reducing clinician travel, and improving post-discharge follow-up across a distributed organization. To address this, they adopted Microsoft technologies—primarily Office 365 (including SharePoint Online and Skype for Business) and Microsoft Power BI—to enable centralized communication, remote care, and data-driven decision making.
Using Microsoft Power BI alongside the Office 365 suite, Advocate implemented video-enabled ICU rounds, a SharePoint-based Patient Experience System for high-risk follow-up, Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection for security, and Power BI dashboards to track services like language carts. The initiative produced measurable results: a 63% three-year risk-adjusted ROI on Office 365, $53.8M in information worker productivity gains, $2.2M saved in time and transportation over three years, two million worker hours saved over three years, and $400K in infrastructure savings every four years, while improving care coordination and patient outcomes.
