ABN AMRO, a large Netherlands-based bank, faced rising financial crime and an unsustainable workload sifting billions of transactions across seven million customers with weekly batch dashboards and growing case inflows. To modernize due diligence and transaction monitoring, the bank adopted Microsoft Power BI alongside Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure Data Explorer (ADX) to handle massive datasets and improve investigative capability.

Using Microsoft Power BI integrated with Azure Synapse and ADX—with Microsoft providing training and architecture support—ABN AMRO linked ADX to Power BI, optimized queries and reports, and integrated analytics into operational workflows. The result: support for hundreds of concurrent users on tens of billions of records, dramatic performance gains (heavy-report wait times cut from about a minute to ~15 seconds), time savings across 2,500+ analysts, improved detection with fewer false positives, and new capabilities like free-text and text-mining investigations.
