A look at Proterial's data governance—building a data analytics platform with Azure Synapse Analytics and Power BI

Proterial, Ltd., a large Japanese materials manufacturer, faced fragmented IT systems and inconsistent coding that prevented company-wide visibility of management data. To centralize scattered finance, HR, procurement and production data and establish data governance, Proterial selected Azure Synapse Analytics alongside Microsoft Power BI (with implementation partners JFE Systems and System EXE) to visualize sales profit-and-loss by product and account as part of its DX strategy.

The solution used a three-tier data lake (Raw/Curated/Application) built on Azure Synapse Analytics with Power BI dashboards for management, going live in July 2022 and with Power BI roll‑out beginning January 2023. Microsoft Power BI adoption has steadily increased — portal views and access rose, training demand jumped from a 20-person session cap to 140 sign-ups for the next class — and Proterial is expanding data coverage every two months while strengthening governance (trialing Microsoft Purview) to scale analytics company-wide.
