A Growing Bank's Fruitful New Approach to Data Helps It Lead in Online Banking

Tangerine, a Canadian online bank, needed faster, more scalable access to customer data and feedback to stay competitive and innovate quickly. Its existing data warehouse and BI tools were too technical and slow—BI requests could take a full day to fulfill—and the bank expected 50% data growth over five years. To give business leaders rapid insights into customer calls, face‑to‑face interactions and social sentiment, Tangerine turned to Microsoft Power BI.

Tangerine implemented a Microsoft Power BI–based solution alongside Microsoft Analytics Platform System (APS) and Azure HDInsight, migrating 45 BI users to a Microsoft BI environment (Excel, SQL Server Analysis Services, Power BI, SharePoint) and moving its warehouse to APS. The Microsoft Power BI solution centralized internal and external data, made BI effectively instantaneous (reducing report turnaround from a day to near real time), enabled real‑time campaign and product adjustments, and delivered scalable performance to support future growth.
