Wichita Public Schools empowers 60,000 students and staff by creating virtual classrooms and hybrid work capabilities on Microsoft Teams

Wichita Public Schools, which serves 94 schools and special program sites and about 60,000 students and staff (nearly 50,000 students and roughly 10,000 employees), had to move quickly when COVID-19 made in-person schooling and work impossible. IT teams also needed to maintain compatibility with the district’s existing unified communications infrastructure while minimizing disruption.

Working with Microsoft partner NEC, the district rapidly connected to Microsoft Teams and integrated its public switched telephone network (PSTN) to enable direct inward dialing from anywhere. The rollout transitioned all 94 sites online, created virtual classrooms for almost 50,000 students, and provided a remote communication platform for nearly 10,000 teachers and staff—positioning the district for future remote work and online education.
