Weka Smart Fridge improves vaccine management so more people can be protected against diseases

Weka Health Solutions, a Boston-based startup, set out to protect vaccines and improve global immunization by designing a refrigerator specifically for clinics that enforces CDC storage spacing, limits access to individual vials, and provides remote monitoring and automated inventory. The challenge was to ensure temperature-controlled, auditable vaccine handling that works in low-resource or mobile settings, scales to thousands of sites, and reduces the financial risk clinics face from spoilage or misrecorded doses.

Working with partners, Weka built a Smart Fridge that uses a Surface kiosk and Raspberry Pi sensors to send telemetry to Azure IoT Hub and Azure Stream Analytics, which route data to SQL, DocumentDB, Blob storage and Dynamics CRM Online; eight micro‑services and automated provisioning make deployment quick (about 15 minutes). The solution delivers real‑time temperature alerts, precise inventory logs, offline and battery/solar operation, and scalability to 1,000+ units—reducing spoilage and administrative costs (an estimated >$1,000/month savings for some practices) while protecting $40K–$60K vaccine inventories and improving patient safety.
