NHS Glasgow & Clyde uses Microsoft Artificial Intelligence to transform care for patients

NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, working with Microsoft and partner KenSci, is trialling Microsoft AI solutions to transform care for patients with chronic conditions such as COPD. Facing overfull hospitals, rising admissions and the high cost of unplanned hospital visits (around £6,000 each), the health board sought ways to predict deterioration, reduce admissions and ease pressure on resources.

The pilot uses AI to spot trends and predict exacerbations for 400 COPD patients, enabling earlier interventions and better self‑management. Early results point to improved patient outcomes, higher quality of life and potential annual NHS savings of about £1.2 million for the pilot cohort, with applicability to other long‑term conditions like diabetes and cancer.
