Preview of the FINRA Case Study

NGO financial regulator uses Windows 10 for in-place, time-saving upgrades from Windows 7

The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) is a not‑for‑profit, independent U.S. securities regulator with a highly mobile workforce that handles confidential, data‑intensive exams. Facing the need to move thousands of devices from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and deploy 64‑bit Office 2016 for better performance and security, FINRA needed a fast, low‑disruption upgrade path that preserved strong device encryption and compatibility with its custom apps.

FINRA’s Desktop Engineering team built an in‑place, self‑service upgrade process with Microsoft support, using System Center Configuration Manager plus BitLocker and cloud services to manage deployments and testing (leveraging Hyper‑V to cut test cycles). Employees upgraded themselves, testing time fell from five days to one or two, IT was freed for higher‑value work, licensing and support costs dropped, and staff gained productivity and new capabilities from Windows 10 and Office 2016.
