Enterprise Strategy supports South African city in developing ambitious smart city program to transform services

Polokwane Municipality in South Africa engaged Microsoft Services to help turn an ambitious Smart City vision into reality. Facing population growth, tourism goals and inefficient paper-based processes, the city needed to modernize services, improve citizen engagement and build digital skills—all within tight human and financial constraints and while delivering early wins to sustain the program.

Microsoft’s Enterprise Strategy team delivered a six-month assessment and a practical 3–5 year roadmap across the city’s six smart pillars, aligning technology to budget and business priorities and recommending standardized (configure-before-customize) solutions. The partnership mobilized subject-matter experts and training, and launched initial projects—broadband fiber, smart metering, an innovation hub and university collaborations—reducing risk, accelerating e-services and positioning Polokwane for longer-term digital transformation.
