XTO Energy taps into IoT and the cloud to optimize operations and drive growth with Azure and Dynamics 365

ExxonMobil’s subsidiary XTO Energy faced the challenge of monitoring and optimizing thousands of widely dispersed oilfield assets in the harsh Permian Basin, where technicians often had to collect data manually with limited connectivity. To address this, ExxonMobil turned to Microsoft Corporation and its Azure cloud and IoT services, along with Dynamics 365 Field Service, to digitalize operations and make field data easier to capture and analyze.

Microsoft Corporation implemented an Azure-based IoT architecture using Azure IoT Edge, Azure IoT Hub, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure Data Lake, Azure Databricks, and Azure Time Series Insights to stream, store, and visualize well data in near real time. The solution helped XTO Energy quickly identify problem wells, improve troubleshooting, enable dynamic routing, and reduce downtime from days to about an hour in some cases, while supporting safer, more efficient operations and future growth.
