When seconds matter, prominent medical center uses Azure SignalR Service for critical messages

The University of Vermont Medical Center needed to replace and then scale a computer-based emergency alert system for its new hospital building as staff, devices, and notification types grew rapidly. Its challenge was delivering critical messages reliably and precisely across a complex medical campus, especially when seconds matter. The center used Microsoft Azure SignalR Service as part of its Stat clinical alert system, along with other Microsoft technologies.

Microsoft Corporation implemented a cloud-based solution using Azure SignalR Service to enable real-time, targeted, bidirectional alerts with secure identity and user-group scoping. The result was a highly scalable, reliable system that improved closed-loop communication and alert tracking; UVMMC eliminated the original 2,000-person limit and can now broadcast to 5,000 to 6,000 devices in less than a second, with the ability to scale far beyond that if needed.
