University Reduces Costs with Streamlined Cross-Platform Virtual Machine Management

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) faced the challenge of managing a complex, costly virtualization environment that relied on 30 VMware servers to run 550 mixed-OS virtual machines. As a public institution, UTSA sought to reduce IT spending and streamline management by leveraging its existing Microsoft Campus Agreement. They turned to Microsoft to migrate away from VMware and eliminate expensive third-party licenses.

Microsoft provided a solution using Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V and Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 to consolidate management and host both Linux and Windows VMs. With assistance from Microsoft Services and a partner, UTSA migrated its workloads and used System Center for centralized monitoring and automated provisioning. This migration, implemented by Microsoft, is projected to deliver significant annual cost savings, increase IT staff efficiency, and provide a more integrated, manageable infrastructure.
