University Moves Reporting Solution to Cloud for Scalability and Easier Management

The University of Washington needed a way to expand its popular self-service reporting application, Michelangelo, handle growing demand from internal and outside users, and reduce the IT effort required to manage it. Microsoft Corporation’s Azure cloud platform was chosen to replace the on-premises setup, offering the scalability, reliability, and security UW needed for its education and research environment.

Microsoft Corporation moved Michelangelo to Microsoft Azure with only modest code changes, adding cloud storage and federated authentication support for UW NetID and InCommon. The result was lower hardware and maintenance costs, improved IT staff productivity, and better performance and reliability, while also creating a scalable platform that could support about 500 users and future partnerships with other institutions.
