University learns how to cool the cost of data storage

San Diego State University was struggling to keep up with rapidly growing data backups across Veeam, Commvault, and campus surveillance systems, with volumes approaching 1 petabyte and tape-based archiving becoming too costly, slow, and limited. The university needed a way to retain data longer while continuing to use its existing backup tools, and turned to Microsoft Corporation’s Azure Storage along with CloudLanes.

Microsoft Corporation, working with CloudLanes, implemented a cloud data preservation platform that unified SDSU’s backup streams, improved security and auditability, and enabled tiered storage with newer backups kept on-premises and older data moved to Azure cool Blob storage. The result was at least five times faster backup throughput, average transfer speeds of 2.6 TB per hour, and significantly lower local storage costs, while also preserving chain of custody and giving SDSU faster access to archived data.
