A Microsoft Corporation Case Study
TransAlta, a Canadian power generator, faced a significant challenge with its outdated on-premises data collection system, which was off mainstream vendor support. The proposed upgrade was costly, and the existing solution lacked the ability to provide the deep, real-time analytics needed to monitor equipment and production efficiently. To overcome this, TransAlta turned to vendor Microsoft Corporation and its Azure cloud platform to find a more modern and cost-effective solution.
Microsoft implemented a hybrid solution utilizing several Azure services, including Event Hubs for data ingestion, Stream Analytics for real-time processing, and Power BI for dashboard visualizations. This approach allowed TransAlta to avoid a large capital expenditure, significantly reducing both initial and ongoing operational costs. The results were substantial, with the new system processing over 56 million telemetry readings shortly after deployment, providing enhanced data insights, proactive alerts, and requiring minimal maintenance.
