Case Study: ASOS achieves scalable, high-performance e-commerce growth with Microsoft Corporation's Azure

A Microsoft Corporation Case Study

Preview of the ASOS Case Study

Top online retailer bets on Azure to provide a stellar experience for 15.4 million customers worldwide

ASOS, the UK-based online fashion retailer, needed a more flexible platform to support rapid global growth, improve mobile shopping experiences, and keep pace with changing consumer expectations. Its legacy monolithic, on-premises e-commerce system could no longer easily scale or support new features, so ASOS turned to Microsoft Corporation’s Azure cloud platform, including Azure Cosmos DB, Azure SQL Database, and Azure Traffic Manager.

Microsoft Corporation helped ASOS rebuild its platform as a microservices architecture on Azure, enabling faster development, global reach, and stronger resiliency. The new system handled more than double the prior year’s Black Friday order volume, served 167 million requests in 24 hours, reached 3,500 requests per second, and delivered average product API response times of 48 milliseconds. ASOS also increased release velocity dramatically, from 490 releases in a full fiscal year to 1,300 releases in the first quarter alone.
