The IoT of the Storm: Energy provider builds real-time asset tracking, enhancing storm recovery and customer service

Southern Company, one of the largest energy providers in the United States, needed a real-time way to collect and analyze sensor data from trucks, equipment, and crew devices to improve storm response and daily operations. Working with Microsoft Corporation, the company looked for a solution that could turn large batches of data into actionable insights for tracking assets, crews, and equipment across its service area.

Microsoft Corporation implemented Azure IoT Hub and Azure Stream Analytics, along with other Microsoft Azure services, to ingest, standardize, and process data in real time from multiple device types and sources. The result was faster power restoration, better driver safety, and reduced equipment theft risk; during storms, Southern Company can scale the Azure solution to handle more messages, alerts, and active crews, helping it get the right people and vehicles to the right place faster.
