Thailand’s AI-powered healthcare system curbs government costs, helps save lives

The Ministry of Public Health in Thailand needed a faster, smarter way to monitor public restroom hygiene and spot public health risks before they could lead to disease outbreaks. With help from Microsoft Corporation’s AI and Cognitive Services, along with a mobile app, the agency moved away from paper-based surveys and began capturing, tracking, and sharing sanitation data digitally.

Microsoft Corporation implemented an AI-powered platform using machine learning and computer vision to analyze more than 11,000 restroom photos collected by about 2,000 volunteers. The system achieved about 80–90% accuracy in identifying hygiene conditions, helping officials score sanitation, flag problem areas, and target improvements more quickly—supporting earlier risk detection and helping curb government costs while improving public health.
