Case Study: TalkTalk Group achieves faster, scalable streaming TV delivery with Microsoft Corporation Azure Service Fabric

A Microsoft Corporation Case Study

Preview of the TalkTalk Group Case Study

TalkTalk innovates with a streaming TV service based on Azure Service Fabric

TalkTalk Group, the UK’s third-largest cable TV provider, needed to scale its streaming TV service after acquiring blinkbox and rebranding it as TalkTalk TV. Its existing Azure-based, lift-and-shift setup using custom services, SQL Server-backed queues, and multiple VMs was becoming hard to scale and slow to update as demand grew and more on-demand content and device support were added, so it turned to Microsoft Corporation and Azure Service Fabric.

Microsoft Corporation helped TalkTalk Group redesign the content encoding and resource resolution platform as microservices on Azure Service Fabric, integrated with Azure Media Services, Azure Storage, Azure Active Directory, Key Vault, and Azure Batch. The new architecture enabled rolling upgrades, independent service deployment, and better scalability; TalkTalk said the one-box development experience boosted productivity and that Azure Service Fabric helped its small engineering team deliver features faster, with support for over 1.5 PB of content and a million monthly users.
