Balzano, a Zurich-based Swiss venture, develops AI-powered medical image interpretation software with Swiss hospitals to improve radiologist workflows and help address rising imaging volumes and diagnostic error rates. The company needed a way to securely deploy, manage, and scale its ScanDiags solution while supporting both structured data and machine learning workloads; it used Microsoft Corporation products including Azure Machine Learning and SQL Server 2019.

Microsoft Corporation helped Balzano move more of its AI and data processing into SQL Server 2019 Big Data Clusters, combining SQL Server, Spark, and HDFS on Kubernetes for a more scalable and manageable production environment. The result was less engineering overhead, more data scientist productivity without adding headcount, stronger security and compliance capabilities, and a system that is expected to support deployment to thousands of hospitals.
